  1. Hi - has anyone who has just started cycling ever experienced pain and stiffness in their hands. I have a really old [30year+] new to me bike Sears Free spirit 5 speed with an upright style handlebar, etc. I haven't biked for years and don't know if my knees will approve of biking as exercise so have the old bike to try out. Anyway in the past 2 weeks I've gone on short "jaunts" 1-2 K without any trouble. Yesterday morning I went for a 4K ride before work - [in a quiet area real early in the morning] It was -3 so my hands did get cold. My hands became very achy and "stiff" very hard to work on the computer or to grip a pen. Can biking hurt your hands? Thanks for any imput

In a word -- Yes...a couple of things come to mind. One is that gloves are invaluable in preventing this kind of problem. Don't forget that not only is there the issue of the actual air temperature but you are creating your own "wind chill" factor.

Secondly, how is your posture on the bike? Are you hanging on for dear life? Are your shoulders, neck etc tense from "turtling"?
