STI shifting for dummies

By STI, I assume that you mean that *both* shifters on each side are integrated to the brake lever (ie, big silver brake lever, and little black tab just inside of that).

Well, let's start with the right hand:
1) pushing the little black tab toward the bike centerline shifts the rear derailleur by one cog into the next higher gear (ie, next smaller cog).
2) pushing the silver brake lever halfway (one click) toward the centerline shifts the rear derailleur by one cog into the next lower gear (ie, bigger cog)
3) pushing the silver brake lever all the way toward the centerline shifts the rear derailleur by *2 or 3* cogs lower (bigger cogs).
4) pull brake lever toward rider to use rear brake.

Left hand is similar, but sorta reversed:
1) pushing the little black tab toward the bike centerline shifts the front derailleur into the next lower chainring (ie, smaller chainring).
2) pushing the silver brake lever all the way (there is no 'one click' position) toward the centerline shifts the front derailleur into the next higher chainring (ie, bigger chainring).
3) pull brake lever toward rider to use front brake.
