so i guess i should say someone was *admiring* my bike here at school and squeezing the brake levers kinda hard, altho not especially hard. anyways, when they were done i noticed that the left(front) break lever was clearly not sitting properly in the cradle or housing and was still applying the break slightly. when i looked closer i found a little bit of plastic was loose in the housing and preventing the brake lever from returning to its slack position. altho its hard to describe exactly, looking at the other sti the little peice of plastic is supposed to sit on top and on the back of the main lever assembly, and i beleive is part number six if you click the link below.
anyways the peice looks rather useless and doesnt really want to click back into place. my question is does this little bit of plastic serve a function, and if so should i try harder to reattach it somehow? thanks for the help, and sorry for doing a horrible job of describing that.

The rear cover should fit snugly and not mess with the return of the brake lever. It isn't properly seated or is distorted/broken. If you can't properly re-attach it have your local bike shop take an experienced look. You may need to order a replacement part.
