I have a stem that is too long for my liking. I had an extra floating around so i tried putting it on however the stem opening is to small for the bars. I am willing to buy a new shorter one, but how do i know if it fits properly?

Measure the diameter of your handlebar where it's clamped to the stem. For quality bikes it's going to be 25.4, 26.0, 26.4, 31.8, or 35.0 mm. I'm betting you have 31.8.
If you don't have a caliper, your local bike shop would gladly measure it for you.
