Steerer tube problems

You, or your LBS, needs to overhaul the headset but if you hear and feel gringing replacement may be

Take it to a bike shop and have them look at it...it's what they do...

Definately take it to a shop, or overhaul it yourself, if you know how.

There is something in there that shouldn't be. Grit, a crushed ball, broken retainer or one of the
race faces is worn.
