Hey i'm looking for my first mountain bike and was wondering what a good price range is and what type of suspension is good to start out with? I want something that's not really expensive but with still last a long time. Any suggestions? Also does anyone know if Jeep makes good bikes?

I haven't seen the Jeep bikes in person, but I've seen them posted on ebay. From what I've seen, I think you could do better. Their level of componentry isn't all that great for the price. Also, they have a funky Monroe front suspension fork. I'm just guessing here but the front fork is probably made by somebody else and Monroe puts their stickers on it.
If you want to get a non-department store bike you're going to end up plugging down $300 - $500 to get a decent entry level MTB. The '05 models are starting to show up so look for a deal on an '04 model to save some scratch. At that price range the components haven't gone though any overhauls yet. In time they will though. But not this year.
