starting in Belfast area

I'd head north along the coast of Antrim. Cliffs with no hard riding is
a bit of a contradiction, however, if you can manage some steep but
short hills, the old coast road at Torr Head is exceptionally beautiful,
and gets you off the modern A road. If you get all the way around to
Derry and still have time you have the option of much wilder scenery in
Co. Donegal. Try not to by-pass those peninsulas like Inishowen; they
are some of the best places.

You should have a great time. That's the best place for cycling I know.

I found to my surprise during a trip to Ireland (north and south) in
May that the intercity buses carry cycles at the discretion of the
driver (and without booking). I had no problems taking my bike on 3
buses. The only problem would seem to be if the luggage area was too
full of bags. I was touring with a Dawes Galaxy fitted with rear
panniers and just placed it on the floor (derailler side up). The
pannier gave enough padding to prevent any damage.
This would give you the option of starting the tour anywhere
you wanted depending on wind forecasts etc. or too get to the more
scenic areas avoiding intervening busy A roads etc.
