I have been an avid cyclist my whole life ( I am 48) Three years ago I was diagnosed with a cancer. I have now been given the "all clear" but all the operations and other treatment have rendered me "half the men" I used to be. I am now ready to get back on my cycle again and start training. I have asked several people in the know, but their advise is more geared towards long distance runners.
I am well aware that I will have to train an awful lot. I want to start off gradually and slowly build up ... I live in New Zealand in a very hilly area. This is providing me with an extra challange as I used to live and train in Holland before I was struck down with cancer.
Do any of you guys have any tips or ideas on how to get started?
Get a big cassette and/or a compact crank so that you can spin easily for a while, at least until you've got the strength and endurance to push the harder gears.
