Stanage Edge Question

According to High Peak Walks (Mark Richards, Cicerone Press), p. 94:

"Curiosity may have caused you to question the origin and purpose of the
small neatly sculpted and numbered rock basins that occur along this Edge at
regular intervals. The first one encountered at Crow Chin is No. 17,
however, there are one hundred. They were cut by two gamekeepers at the
beginning of this century for one old penny a time, to ensure that their
precious grouse had a ready supply of water."

Thanks for the solution. As to the talk of trolls, my personal belief is
that they died out some years ago! What we are seeing is excessive drinking
of Robinson's Old Tom. This can of course lead to knarled features, a
rolling gate, etc.
