I've worn a number of different brands (including Polar) of non-coded straps with mine and they all work fine. Can't comment on the "wearlink" specifics.

I think the manual indicates ~1500 hours of life is expected? I have yet to replace mine, although it's not that old. I suspect a search of the forum would find a more definitive answer.

Very. I've got both an SRM and PTSL and, in this respect, the SRM generally does better, in my experience. I've had my SRM soaked to the bone and it just keeps going -- although, if you wrap the PT computer head with plastic wrap and keep the contacts dry along with keeping the hub cap seals lightly greased, mine has held up pretty well in really wet conditions. I don't do anything special to the SRM before a rainy ride. As always, YMMV.
