Spreading steel fork?

  1. Hi all,

    I know it's possible to spread the rear triangle of a steel frame by a few millimeters (whether by 'cold-setting' or elbow grease) to accomodate, say, a 126mm axle in a 120mm frame. I've done this before, never had a problem.

    I'm now faced with the prospect of trying this on a steel fork. Suddenly I'm, shall we say, lacking in confidence, and I don't know why. I'd be spreading a 96mm fork to 100mm to put a wheel in an older Peugeot frame.

    Should I approach this the same as with spreading the rear triangle, or am I dicing with death if I try this on the front?

    it's 2 mm per side. Just spread it by hand and drop the hub in. Maybe there is an extra spacer you could remove on each side of the axel, and if it's a cone and ball hub,there is the possibility of using thinner locknuts.
