Mark Cavindish must have done well, since he wasn't in the breakaway at
the top. Hammond certainly was and so was a Recycling rider who may have
been Robin Sharman. But clearly the peloton must have been making a
catch probably in the last Km (since Hammond was still in front but only
by seconds). It sounds like it may have been an exciting finish.

It was a crowd. Seriously. There were people lining both sides of the
road two or three deep for a mile that I could see, and up where we were
it was more like ten deep. What it was like at the line - about 150
metres further up from us - I don't know. It was very much like the
mountaintop scenes you see from the TdF, except a lot more British and
better behaved - and, of course, since Shap isn't really that steep, the
riders were going /much/ faster than on an alpine climb. I'll be posting
a fuller story later tonight or tomorrow.

It was. van Impe punctured and was dropped from the break who then went
faster. Rob was wasted at the end but held on for second. Mark
Cavendish got third in the bunch sprint. Jeremy Hunt 6th, so Hunt is in
the points jersey and Hammond in the Sprints jersey.

There is a link to video highlights on the BBC web page but it refuses

That is fantastic, and a shame it couldn't be seen by the Great British
Public on National WWP news.

It was great at the line, I was right at the barrier, but I didn't look
behind me to see how many were there...
everyone had the blow-up hands on and were hitting the boards as
Hammond came in
he had a big smile on his face with both arms in the air at least 20
yards before the finish line...

I got there about 1 O'clock and the 2 hour wait was worth it

I cycled from Blackburn to Blackpool and back, a total of about 60
miles, my longest bike ride so far...
