  1. Previously I have been splitting the chain at the End Pin; the darker coloured one compared to the others. I have had no problems prior using this method whereby I reuse the original end pin when installiing the chain.

    I just read the Shimano service instructions for chain chain splitting (for link removal/installation). It advises you to split it at a Link Pin rather than the End Pin. Is this just a marketing ploy to get you to buy more Reinforcing/Connecting pins?????

    Can anybody tell me which pin you remove when taking your chain off your bike and also give me your views on the pros and cons of splitting the chain at the various types of pins?

  2. I always split the chain at another pin - but that is because Shimano advise you to. I don't know if it does actually weaken the chain by splitting the end pin but I don't fancy risking it.

    I usually clean the chain in situ.
