I have an old model Specialized Hardrock... it's pretty good for most purposes. I'm a newbie in mountain biking as well and it's served me well so far, even over some pretty technical terrain.

my brother purchased a hard rock two years ago (not sure which model) and i rode it a few times and i felt like the components were lacking for gettting power transferred from your legs to the bike in order to get up some inclines. the shifting is also not all too great. one of my bikes is a rockhopper comp that is 4 years old and is a much better value in my opinion. the components on it make a huge difference going from the hardrock to rockhopper. if you want a good value that you will be satisfied with for years to come i would say to upgrade to a rockhopper for sure. they cost about $300 more, but are worth every penny.
