Hello to all! I'm new to this forum and have a question that I'm sure sounds completely amateur to everyone here. However, I would much appreciate some help on the subject. I've just recently gotten back into riding, though I've realized my ride either needs some quality mods or I need a whole new bike. I can't quite figure out what to do. I have a 1998 Specialized Hard Rock Sport. It's has some okay Shimano components (Acera X) and a good old chro-moly frame (that's right, old school  ) and that's about the extent of the thrills. I'm not one who needs a thousand dollar bike or anything but I am serious enough to need some good stuff....I suppose I could be called a "novice" biker...not expert, not amateur. I need to purchase the following (not necessarily brand new)....a new fork (one that is quality and fits the bike), new stem and bars (riser rather than flat...found a good deal on some KORE stuff), wider tires, maybe some new wheels, and a new saddle. What kind of pieces are priced well and are quality pieces? Like I said, I'm wondering if this is a completely pointless venture...should I just start fresh? If I do, I'm looking at the 350-450 price range. Any suggestions? Help would be much appreciated.

what size headset does the fork use? If you can pick up parts relatively cheaply then go for it. If not then sack it off and start again.

I enjoy turning **** bikes into serious pieces of kit.

I know for sure that I'd have to get a larger headset. I'm not exactly sure of what size or even how they are sized in the first place. I'm looking at probably a Manitou XVert Fork.
