Dear Doug,
I suggest running to American Pie by Don McLean. If that doesn't work try Cher, she'll drive you
insane and won't notice the pain in your legs.
No doubt, shortly, you'll get buckets of helpful soles (cough) thronging here to answer your
question properly. In the meantime, consider forming, in your mind or elsewhere in or about your
person, a plan. This plan may include, but not limited to, a deep cross legged navel peering
cogitation about how far and fast you wish to run one day, a brief reflection of your current
weight, a visit to a library, a visit to an old age home, and a visit to
homestarrunner.comsbemail87.htmlOpen ↗. Next, try getting someone to write the plan on paper.
Then get them to follow your plan and see what happens to them. If they get thinner, faster, tighter
but somehow odd looking skin, wavy hair, a penchant for expensive polyester things called
'singlets', mild injuries that are fun to 'run through', and a stupid looking jacket which makes a
point of covering ones butt while rendering it visible at night from five hundred yards, then
congratulations, your plan sort of worked.
Oh, wait, that doesn't answer your question does it? [censored]. (No really, [censored]. Essential before any
long runs)
Ok, here is my best advice. I been saving this little gem for years. You should be honoured. Ready?
Here it is : DON'T GET INJURED! Seriously, at least not until you've been gripped by an endorphin
induced silly 'little voice' that says "you can do it, no problem, its a nice day, just twice
around the lake, come on ...". Until then take it easy. Increase your mileage slowly. Stretch After
your muscles are warm. Get real running shoes fitted at a running store ... blah blah blah. Like I
said, plan.
Good luck, Surf
