  1. Well I just turned 30 today and I have been thinking about getting into road racing. I used to road race motorcycles, but lost a couple of friends this year, so my wife asked me to hang it up. I love two wheels! Anyway, I just don't know what to get. Should I buy a $600 bike or a $2000 one. Whats good? Can some of give me some advice (bike, equipment, etc...). Are their any rules against carbon fiber bikes? Thanks for your help.

  2. Holymoly. Too bad about the motorcycling! In any event, have you ever ridden before? Competed before? Do you own any kind of bike?

Go to your local bike shop and see what kind of used bikes they have. Get something that fits you well (get the shop people to help you). Do not go for flashy, super duper stuff (unless, of course, you are SURE you want to make that kind of investment).

I do not know where you are from, but I think that for less than USD 1,000 you can get a very nice bike for your needs. I realise the stuff probably looks silly, but do get cycling specific clothing (at least riding shoes, a helmet, gloves and a pair of padded cycling shorts).

Start riding regularly, starting slowly, and working up the distances you ride, the intensity and of course the number of rides per week. Find out about the local clubs, your bike shop will have the information, and start to occasionally ride with them when you have a base level of fitness.

If you are just starting out, I would not bother thinking about racing this year. Just ride, see if you enjoy it, and get yourself into shape for the 2005 season. For curiosity, go see a few local races and keep in mind the fitness and bike handling skills you see in the racers demonstrate.

    Welcome and enjoy your riding!
