I have a Trek 1220 and have been riding for over 4 years. I have done many long rides (AIDS- Montreal to Portland -2001). Over the last two years I have been having very severe back pain after just 20 miles of riding. I checked the sizing of the bike (as per some articles on web) and it sems ok. I am wondering if a Hybrid would ease the pain (as opposed to my currenet road bike). Any thoughts or experiences?
I would do two things. First, start to do some stretching, before and after rides. A great book, which I use, is Bob Anderson's Stretching. I just do the chapter for back stretches, which takes less than 10 minutes. Amazon.com has the book for $11.87.
Second, ask a knowledgeable friend, or someone at your LBS to take a look at your riding position. Perhaps just rotating the handlebars up a bit would put you in a more upright position and aleviate the pain. Or some other minor adjustment to effect your riding position.
If it is really severe pain a visit to your doctor or chiropractor would be in order.
