I recently "upgraded" to a threadless fork and 31.8 stem
and bar (I use the quotes 'cuz due to a crash I haven't
had the opportunity to ride and decide). Certainly a
lighter bike now.
But to the meat of the matter: in attempting to attach a new
'puter to the bar, I noted that the bulged section was not
wide enough to support both of the mount attachment zip ties
at the same diameter, resulting in an annoyingly "tilty"
'puter. Sorry, but not acceptable to a software QA engineer.
I have thought about shimming one side or moving it outboard
on the bar but neither idea has had garnered significant
affection just yet, although they are on the short list. I
also considered Cronometro's "the knob" but it attaches to a
max diameter of 1 3/8' and the stem I have is about 1 3/4".
I could hack one and zip tie it on - but the new 'puter
mount stands fairly widely and looking at "the knob" (I hate
that name), I'm not even sure it will support it.
I thought about some sort of custom knob, perhaps of pvc
pipe or aluminum, cut with a hole saw to the diameter of the
stem (like mitering tubes before welding or brazing) and
with slots for zip ties
- damn, it might just work.
Hey - I have it in my odd parts bin - an old icon bar,
already anodized, ready to roll. Sweet, now I just need to
get the right hole saw and bam, maybe drill a single hole
for the zip tie - the miter, if well done will hold the
position and the zip tie will provide the clamping.
Before I spend the time to do my own kickin' custom dealie
(despite being laid up, I have more money than time, an
unusual position for
me), does anyone know of anything like I am talking
about but not that one that sticks out like a "t" in
front of the bar - don't like it aesthetically, and
in my preferred design, the puter is somewhat
protected in a crash by the frame and bar (tees off
the stem to one side).
Can anyone do my idea one better? Anyone want to loan me
a hole saw?
