Can anyone (anti-)recommend a bike shop in/near Solihull, who are
patient enough to deal with a complete biking newbie with a 10-speed
that needs some TLC?
And in particular, are Red Kite Cycles any good?

R, not in Solihull.
Red Kite, IMHO, tends to be at the "keen roadie" end of the market - but
they do keep a good range of stuff.The other place to try is Scotts on the Stratford Road just north of Hall
Green Island on the LH side - a real "LBS" complete with a bloke in a brown
warehouse coat .... excellent and probably what you are looking for.RG

coat, especially if accompanied by a few oil marks and calloused hands.I wouldn't be surprised if the next Tory leader dressed like this...
