How about the Electric Bothy in Glenfinnan?
Get the West Highland Line to Glenfinnan, and head up the glen.
Forget what the name of the bothy is, but last time I was there
it had an electric meter which took 50p pieces.
Tarmac road almost all te way there, and a land rover track goes higher.

I am thinking of somewhere fairly spartan just to chill out - say a cabin,
teepee or hut where one could retire with bike, books and whisky. Ideally not
too far from Edinburgh.

Bothy? Carefully picked there could be some good riding.

Definitely spartan. Quiet? Midweek yes, weekend no if it is easy to
cycle to.

Any of the mountain bothies, but e.g. Back Hill o' the Bush

The CTC has a cabin not far from the Crook Inn in upper Tweedsdale - I'm
not sure who looks after it, it was looking a little tatty last time I
passed.
