  1. What exactly are sis gears which, I've been told, are the latest technology press button type gear changing, all done effortlessly.
Can I get my singlespeed giant halfway fitted with these gears?

Uh, no. "Shimano Indexed Shifting" SIS gears are just a step up (some may
disagree) from friction shifters. They "click" into each gear as you move the
shift lever, making it easier to accurately shift gears.

SIS can be on downtube shifters, barcon shifters, etc and is not necessarily
the latest "combined brake shifter" setup. Campag Ergo and Shimano STI are
    probably what you want.

    See: http://www.sheldonbrown.com/harris/shifters.html

But... why are you asking about fitting gears to a singlespeed in a
    singlespeed forum??!?!
