Rona Yuthasastrakosol and her mom are in town for a couple days and this
morning I collected them at their motel at 6:30 a.m. and we commenced to
the Minneapolis Farmers Market. My goal was for basil, cilantro, and
green onions.
I bought heirloom tomatoes, leeks, a head of cabbage, sweet corn picked
5 hours earlier, button mushrooms, a t-shirt, a charm for my bracelet
(it's a blue ribbon) and okra. Ran out of money before the basil and
cilantro, but Cecilia had bought a bunch and she gave me some.
Messing about in the kitchen a while ago, I made another batch of schoog
-- middle eastern pesto sauce, I guess it might be considered. Mighty
fine.
Then I proceeded to slice the mushrooms thickly and cook them and some
zucchini chunks in olive oil until lightly browned. Removed them from
the pan and put in a couple cloves of garlic, chopped, half the okra I
bought, sliced; fried those for a few minutes. Added corn cut from two
ears, the mushrooms and zucchini, a little bit of onion (no more than
1/4 cup, I'm sure), and a can of Red Gold brand petite diced tomatoes.
A little sea salt and black pepper on top. Simmered until stuff's
tender. Pretty tasty. I thought about some basil and decided to not.
I may go in and sprinkle about a 1/2 teaspoon over it just for the heck
of it.
Rona's as cute as ever, her mom is as charming as ever and not only did
they spring for breakfast at Maria's Cafe, they bought me the most
beautiful bunch of yellow roses - now decorating the kitchen counter, a
most pleasant reminder of a really fine morning with two totally
delightful women. Rona's amazing. Her mom is, too.
There you have it.
