Compared to a roller chain, silent chain offers many benefits such as slightly higher efficiency and longer life. Unfortunately the price is around 4 times the price of a corresponding roller chain.
I can't see what makes the silent chain so much more expensive. Surely it could not just be manufacturing cost. If both chains are the same width and load rating, I can't see how the silent chain would be much more expensive to make.
So basically by setting the price that high, they are really losing out on a lot of potential customers.
I would think if the price gap weren't so big, silent chain would see much much greater use than it does today. The vast majority of chains today are the roller type despite its many inferiority to the silent chain.

Real old post, but I just saw it. It would not be possible to shift gears with this type of chain, as they how almost no side flex.
It's still around. It is very popular for what it is designed for. It drives camshafts and transmissions in many cars. Even if it could make the sideways bends to work with deraillers, it would have a short life exposed to the elements. They last a long time when they are sealed inside a machine and exposed to an oil bath.
