  1. Today we hosted a going-away party for some friends who are moving out
of state. It was a fun afternoon and evening. The food was good, but
it was too darn hot to eat much. We could have eaten dog food for all
it mattered; it was our last day to spend with this wonderful family
    from our neighborhood. Sigh.

    The menu included:

Tortilla chips, tomato salsa, and fresh mango salsa
A cold appetizer made from crescent dough rolled out and baked, then
topped with a cream cheese-sour cream mixture, and sprinkled with lots
of colorful, chopped raw veggies (quite tasty, I don't know what it's
    called)

Baby back ribs, cooked all day in the smoker
Bone-in chicken grilled over charcoal, made with a cider vinegar-cheap
    wine-spice mop
Pasta salad with basil, tomatoes and mozzarella
    Baked beans
    Tossed salad
    Fruit salad

Tons of drinks -- water, sangria, water, beer, water, sodas, water,
    KoolAid
Dessert - Cake, ice cream sandwiches, flavored water ice

It was a fun day. Several families came, and the kids had a great time
together (I'm not 100% sure my kids realize that their friends will not
be around any more after this, though). Everybody snarfed down the
ribs; they were quickly inhaled. The chicken was really good, but we
have a lot leftover. The sangria was the best I've ever made, and it
hit the spot. All too quickly, though, it was over, and we had to say
those final good-byes. Sigh. We will miss these folks!

It sounds like a good time was had by all, apart from it being a
bittersweet goodbye. Lots of good food and drink despite the temperature.
