Been a bit of discussion amongst my TdF watching group about why the peloton took off after Mayo's crash in stage 3.
Some have argued that it wasn't necessary to wait because:
a) the peloton was heading into the cobbles and jockeying for position was essential and part of pre-stage plans.
b) Mayo wasn't in the yellow jersey. (although this shouldn't matter. Armstrong waited for Ullirich after his spectacular crash in 2001, for instance.)
There was definitely some early confusion. I think Ligget said something about not understanding why they didn't wait. And there's no question the Postal, with some help from Phonak and T-Mobile, took off after the cobbles. I can only imagine they were hoping to finish off Mayo. Sounds like taking advantage of a crash to put away a rival to me? So what gives?
