Haing just this weekend moved to the Birmingham area, and living on a canal barge until the house move comes through, but what I do need to find is a shop or place in Birmingham where I can buy a second hand bike. I don't mind spending a few quid..I am mostly looking for a decent frame, of a hybrid/mtb/commuting type, on which I will add/upgrade components over the spring to my own unique tastes! The bike will be used for communtes along the canal or back roads.
So any west midlanders out there that can help...please advise on the best place to purchase a 2nd hand bike

You didn't mention your price range, but for low end things, Selly Oak cycles is probably worth your looking at. It's run by a good engineer who knows his stuff, and he mainly supplies student bikes.
It's opposite Sainsbury's in Selly Oak on the Bristol Road. Buses 61-64, train to Selly Oak, or about 150m off the canal.

Ambrose is right. Selly Oak Cycles is your best bet. Most bike shops don't bother with the hassle of storing s/hand bikes, whereas John at Selly Oak Cycles concentrates on the repair business and s/hand bike sales. I don't think I've ever seen a new bike in there. If you don't see anything you like, he's got loads of frames out the back which he can sometimes be encouraged to make up, but don't expect any high end components. You can cycle there from town straight down the canal to........... oops, sorry, no you can't.

That's it. He made me my first (cheap) adult bike up when I was 16, and then sold me a proper frame to transfer the components on to 2 years later.
