Shoes with the proper cleats [1] are a very good idea with clipless pedals. 😉
I have found that adequate width is very important in avoiding foot numbness and pain (relative
importance increases with BB height relative to the seat). I have a pair of normal width shoes that
do not feel okay for walking riding an upright bike or a low BB recumbent (e.g. RANS Tailwind) but
start to become uncomfortable on a RANS Rocket and miserable on a high BB bike. I do not have
problems with extra wide shoes that have a loose fit in the toebox.
[1] Be forewarned that if you use SPD type pedals that not all SPD and SPD clone cleats and pedals
work well together. In my experience, release is quite difficult with Shimano SH-55 cleats and
Wellgo SPD clone pedals.
