Presently shoe manufacturers appear to be making a big migration to carbon soles, in particular to promote their stiffness (eg Northwave Aerator quote themselves as the "stiffest soles on the market"😉. The literature or at least the reviews usually allude to saving of watts that can be wasted due to sole flex.
I'm inclined to believe the hype in some small way, but has anyone found or estimated any numbers wrt power saving?
I didn't have my PT wheels last summer but when i made the swtich from a shimano "carbon reinforced" plastic/fiberglass sole to an all carbon shimano shoe i definitly felt a difference. Mostly when i get up to sprint of climb when there's significan concentrated force. It was more responsive, and since i have wide feet i'm sure the sole was not only more stiff the length of the shoe but also the width.
I'm not sure if there's a noticable difference while sitting, especially if you're a lighter guy, but carbon shoes tend to weigh less with more stiffness so even then it's worth the upgrade if you need a new set of shoes just for the small weight savings, IMHO.
