I usually spend my weekends riding in the Tortolita Mts, just about 5 miles west of the fire. I was
there today and it was pretty spectacular. The fire is at about 8-9000 feet altitude, and the
Tortolitas are about 3-5000 feet, with a huge valley in between, so I could see the fire the whole
day as I rode. The smoke was billowing from the mountain tops and filling the whole sky to the east.
The wind has carried the smoke to the north, so the cloud extends for miles down the entire Santa
Catalina range and beyond.

The firefighters are saying that it will be _weeks_ until this fire is contained. Even at midday
today, even at the distance I was from the fire, I could see giant plumes of flame on the top of the
ridge. Tonight as I type this I'm looking out my window and can see the broad orange glow over the
mountains. Very eerie.
