I have probably shipped 10 bikes all over the country and
have learned a few lessons. Know what is considered an
oversized box. I punched in a bunch of different
dimensions on Fedex and found out that you can ship a box
from AZ to MN that is 58"x9"x27" that is 45lbs for $24,
and if you increase any dimension by 1 inch it doubles the
price. Also go directly to Fedex or UPS and not a private
authorized dealer because its almost twice the price to
ship that way. What brings this up is the costs I see
people asking to ship bikes or bike parts with outrageous
shipping costs. I understand that there are packing and
handling fees, but some of the bikes and parts come
directly from the manufacturer already packed. Anyway,

Darn it, Joel. I wish I knew that this past summer when I
sold my Bikee and really took a beating on the shipping. I
made both mistakes: a too big box (from a wedgie tandem) and
shipping (very conveniently) from the local Mailbox Plus
store. Thanks for the info. Hmm, I guess I will bother to
disassemble my GS GTO when I ship it to Bar Harbor this
August...I bet I can use a coupla shoeboxes!BentJay

a lot of mailbox stores are now ups stores... and charge ups
rates, instead of the former inflated rates.. staples is
usually the same. they have remove their 'premium' and
charge ups rates..Arne
