    excuse the basic questions

    does the Shimano XTR M961 Front Mech work on an 8 speed chain with 8 speed cassette ?

    i've just had one bought for a birthday present and am having trouble getting it to shift into the outer ring. I'm guessing my 8
    speed chain is too wide ?

    2nd question.

    will a 9 speed chain work with an 8 speed cassette ?

    Yes, but shifting might be poorer.
