I have a Dawes Super Galaxy (1993 model) which currently has a 7 speed cassette and rear mech. I'm going to have change the cassette and mech and I wondered about upgrading to 8 speed. The thing is - how can I tell if the bar end shifters will work with 8 speed? I ask because (a)I don't know much about this stuff, and (b) when I look in catalogues/shops/magazines the references to Shimano bar end shifters say '7/8' speed.
Can't find anything on the Shimano or Dawes websites. Any help or advice would be appreciated.

I changed my 7 speed to 9 speed. I bought 9 speed Shimano Ultegra bar end shifters . The only difference I could see was a 9 speed detent ring. If you use the friction setting I think your existing levers should work. I had to get a 9 speed hub, cassette and chain but am still using the original RSX rear mech. with a 12-34 XT cassette. I think the 7 speed hub will take an 8 speed cassette but not absolutely sure.

replacement mech will do 7, 8 or 9 speed.
7 speed bar ends just about do 8 speed - there are 8 positions. I was never entirely happy with ours though (however I may blame the gear housing for some of this). 8 speed bar ends seem happy with 7 speed though, which is what I suspect the ads refer to.
What sort of 8 speed were you thinking of? Genuine 8 means new freehub body, 8 of 9 on a 7 hub means 9 speed shifter and chain (these will probably work with your existing chainrings and front shifter since it isn't STI).
