Shimano 7701 Wheels

Hi Paul,

I think Shimano moved to the new design as it allows a lighter rim to be
used. I believe the wheels are lighter, but a little less aerodynamic.
Oh yes and the WH-7800s are 10 speed of course 🙂

I have a pair of WH-7701s. The rear wheel needed to be trued after
about 500km, but has been fine ever after.

The big problem I have is where the hooked end of the spokes enters the
rim. The spoke sits out from the side of the rim, and as a result is
far too close to the plastic saftey screw on the brake shoe. I was
changing brake pads every 300km! I have resorted to filing the saftey
screw down to almost nothing - but this could be dangerous if the brake
pad gets too thin (brake shoe would hit the spokes).

So are the 7701s. All Shimano "8-speed" and "9-speed" hubs also work
with 7-speed or 10-speed cassettes.

I have a pair of these too, no problems, though not a lot of miles on
them.

For a while I had them on my Hetchins, but that was a bit risky
onacountta the Hetchins has cantilever brakes, which you are strongly
advised against using with the 7701s. The brake pads could come into
contact with the spoke elbows, which would be a Bad Thing.

I subsequently moved these wheels to my Brown, where they're working fine.

The safety screw can be unscrewed, but you have to go to the side which doesn't
look like the one to work on. Filing it down isn't necessary.
