  1. I'm been putting up with an old bike a friend gave me for while and now that I am wanting to buy one for myself, have the burning question I am sure you have all been faced with at least twenty thousand times before:

    What is better:
    Shimano or Campagnolo???

I am looking at a second hand bike with Campag Xenon groupset and don;t know if thsi will satisfy me or not. I'll be riding three to four times a week doing between 20 & 40 kms each ride.

Please help a newbie with your collective wealth of experience!

They are different, but neither is clearly better than the other. Both are extremely reliable. Try them, buy the one you like better, and whichever you choose is the right one for you.

Thanks for your advice RickF. I had a go at the Campag Xenon and found it OK - but anything is better than what I am riding at the moment! I have not tried any Shimano, though from my research understand there are subtle differences in terms of the integration/thumb lever.

I realise that Xenon is entry-level from Campag. Does this compare with entry level from Shimano, or is the Xenon in the league of Shimano 105?

    Thanks again.

I have not seen the entry-level Campagnolo groupsets, but I think you have to get up to at least the Veloce to be in the same league as the Shimano 105.
