Wonderful that Calum's girlfriend & mum can find some happiness while dealing with their grief. 😉

One of Melbourne Aquarium's newest additions has been named in honour of Cudgee cyclist Calum Ellerton following a mass email name drop by his family and friends.

Calum's girlfriend Gab Keegan inspired people after his funeral this week to suggest the 23-year-old's name as part of a naming competition for one of the aquarium's three Port Jackson shark pups.

An article about Calum's death appeared on the same page of a Melbourne newspaper as the shark naming competition on September 13.

The aquarium yesterday confirmed Calum's name was chosen because of the overwhelming response. The other two sharks were named Sunny and Jack to remind visitors of their Port Jackson breed.'

The university student died in a cycling accident on September 12. He was cycling along Kings Way when he was struck by a truck.

Melbourne Aquarium communications manager Liz Hall said the aquarium was inundated with requests to call one of the sharks Calum.

She said the aquarium had planned to give prizes for the three name givers. One of Melbourne Aquarium's Port Jackson shark pups. However, one prize would instead go to Ms Keegan who was the first to suggest Calum.

Calum's mother Leonie Ellerton was overwhelmed by the news yesterday.

"Lots of his friends were busy emailing,'' Ms Ellerton said.

"I had a big poster up at the house telling everyone to get involved.

"They all went away and emailed and look at the result.

"We'll have to go up and visit (the shark) at some point. It's lovely news.''

Agreed. I'd say "great story" but it doesnt seem appropriate...

Well it's worst than sht that the incident ever occured, but it's Calum's friends and family who took the decision to combine the shark-naming comp with "memoralising" his death. Dealing with grief like this is such a highly individualistic thing. 🙁
