I currently took up bicycling to get my family out of the house. I went to go look for a baby seat to put my 18 month old in while I ride. I ended up buying a bike with a babyseat at a local thrift store for $5 . I thought maybe I would keep the seat and toss the bike. Being a machinist and a welder I basically decided to rebuild it. QUESTION.... it has a shimano 3 speed shifter. The cable needs to be tightened. It works...it just needs tightened. How do I do this? Or should I just buy a new shifter?

Haven't seen a Shimano 3 spd for years. The one I remember had an angled lever that protruded from the axle. When viewed from above there was a red symbol that should align with a cutout in the axle in 2nd gear, if it was adjusted correctly. Cable tension was adjusted through a threaded sleeve and a locknut, or more crudely by moving the rear wheel.

The 3 speed is old. No doubt about that. How ever, where is the threaded sleeve and locknut located?Thank you for your response.

The one I had looked like this:
The wheel axle on the right side protruded about 2" beyond the nut that held the wheel to the frame. At the end of the axle there was a bracket like a two-pronged fork, with the slit between the forks oriented horizontally. In the slit there was a roughly L-shaped lever, hinged at the tip of the prongs and through angle where the "legs" of the L joins. One leg pointed towards the hub, and one was threaded and pointed towards the front of the bike.
The threaded sleeve was attached to the wire running from the gear lever, and the locknut sat some distance down on the threaded part of the L pointing towards the front of the bike. When you moved the gear lever the L-shaped lever toggled and moved a pushrod in and out of the hub through the hollow axle.Sounds familiar?
