SH51 cleats - yes they do

    I recently had to buy new pedals, I got the M520 which come with the
    SH51 single release cleats. The directions state:

    "These cleats only release when the heel is twisted outward. They
    will not release if the heel is twisted in any other direction".

    Bad news for me, since I cannot move my heel outward, I have always
    moved my heel inward to release using the SH55 cleats on my old
    pedals. But I put the new cleats on and tried it, and low and behold,
    they release heel in! Must be the lawyers don't want to mention that
    fact, since one does have to be careful not to put the shoe into the
    spokes.

    Just thought I would share this, since everything I have read on the
    web says just what the instructions say - heel out only.

    Makes me wonder which other cleat systems release heel in, but the
    official line is heel out only.

    Indeedly doodly. The SH55 "multi-release" cleat has the ability to roll
    out of retention to the side, which I think is pretty much a crash-only
    release mode, but probably much loved by MTBers.

    Because they are sprung only at the back clip-point on the pedal, I
    think it is possible to pull more or less straight up out of an SPD
    (slightly back and up, to release the nose of the cleat) but this
    requires unusual forces. I don't think most people could force this
    release mode unless the tension setting was very low.

    I agree. The SH55 multi release cleat can be pulled out of the SPD
    pedal with enough force in about any direction. I did it once to
    avoid toppling over at a stop sign. Panic pull up, and slightly
    outwards I would guess. Useful for crashes but under normal
    situations, you unclip by just twisting your foot left or right in a
    more or less horizontal plane.

    Good pedals have adjustable settings for tension. It also depends on how
    much wear are on the pedals or the cleats.
