    I did not want to hijack the "headset in Seattle" thread, so please
    excuse me.

    That thread raised this question - what are your thoughts and
    experiences on servicing headset cartridge bearings? Do you feel
    that they must be replaced, or can they be cleaned and re-packed?
    If you believe that they CAN be cleaned and re-packed, please tell me
    how you go about cleaning them and how you re-pack them. Please be
    specific as you can.

    Remove seal, flush, regrease. A fine utility knife lifts the seal
    beautifully. CK's don't have press-fit seals, but have a snap-ring and
    loose rubber seal.

    I've repacked a shimano 600 cartridge headset. Once the bearings are out,
    they come apart quite easily. I soaked mine in kerosene. I then clean them
    up with a rag. I assembled everthing and used some grease. Pretty simple.
