Yes it is!
There are all sorts of ways to do this but I recommend using AIM (AOL instant messenger) or Yahoo Chat.
Both of these programs allow you to send SMS.
Just create a new IM and go put the phone number in the send to box.
There are also various websites that do this but I have not used those.
Google used to have a feature in its "Talk" section that allowed this but for some reason they discontinued it. -
