  1. I have an old French Mercier frame with a seatpost marked 26.6. I want
to replace the seatpost. Is there any leeway at all in the diameter of
the new post I will buy. I know from experience that 27.2 will just
    not fit....

Can I squeeze a 26.8? The 26.6 is not very tight -- it easily turns
but never slips when the clamp is tightened.

shows you can still get new 26.6 seatposts, although at $39 they are no
    bargain.

  3. Thanks -- That's exactly the seatpost -- an old Simplex 26.6 -- fluted
shaft.... But I want to pay $10 for a simple seatpost not $40. Gee
-- how much could .2 mm matter?

Here is one that is not exactly like yours, nor $10, but $15 is close
    and it is 26.6mm

I am sure if you look around you may find other 26.6mm seatposts that
    aren't $40.
