Taking the bike (Trek 520) out for a test ride today, I noticed difficulty riding hands off stemming from play in my seatpost. Thought it was a loose seatpost, but upon further inspection found something different. The clamping portion is actually moving within the tube. The seatpost is the stock, single-bolt 27.2 mm bontrager unit that came stock on the 2002 model of this bike, and probably has close to 10,000 miles on it. There doesn't seem to be any kind of screw for an expander that I could tighten. How is this interface originally secured? Is there any way to restore it? Or is it time for a new seatpost?

Check the "Now my ass is loose" post, it may be the answer to your problem.
I did, although the discussion of sticking torx wrenches into one's navel has yet to shine any light on my problem. But hey- that's not to say that it won't :-)
