Tell me, O riders of Brooks saddles in your day clothes, do your trousers wear out at the knees, cuffs, or seat first?
At some point in the last few years my trousers have started to fail on the backside rather than discreetly on the lower leg, and it has just struck me that if my gel-and-kevlar saddle is at fault then I can justify a replacement.

Is it possible that at some point in the last few years you have taken to cycling more than you used to?
(When I was was in full-time university research my trousers used to wear out on the front of the thighs, but that was because of a table masquerading as a badly fitting office desk.)

When I used to ride a brooks saddle, my trousers would wear out either at the knees (through abrasion with tarmac and gravel) or the front of the thighs. Nowadays, my saddle and fashion have both changed. The trousers allow somewhat more upper leg room, and I wear them out at the inner thigh. The ensuing split usually then runs across my seat, as you put it. The Brooks was thrown away by my father when moving house - that'll teach me for leaving it mounted on a bike from the ark.

It is more than possible; but it is not the relative damage done by my current saddle as compared with its predecessors that I am interested in, it is the potential for savings in the wardrobe that might justify a choice of its successor.
