Actually I'm a new member saying howdy! After about a 15 year lapse...I'm getting back into riding.🙂
Below is a pic of my Sierra purchased new in about 1990(?). I commuted with it (30 mile round trip) for two summers...and after a job change, it has pretty much sat in the garage since.
I had to put new shifters on it, and robbed them from a derelict Huffy...with lots of tweeking and tuning, she now shifts like a dream. New grips, bag and tires as well...these are 1.25 slicks for use on the bike trails I now ride.
Nice resurrection! It's a perfect urban bike that will last forever. I had a similar model, the Schwinn Impact Pro MOS, but ended up giving it away (for which I now kick myself in the ass).
Yes, that is. I never really understood I had such an odd chainwheel, until one day I happened to be looking down while pedaling and saw the elliptical action occurring. I've got about 3000 miles on it...and can't say either way as to any advantage it may provide.
In fact, while undertaking the resurrection...I looked into acquiring some standard (round) chainrings with fewer teeth. The local LBS indicated I would have to buy a whole new crankset and bottom bracket. The new technology has rendered these 15 year old machines obsolete apparently. NO matter though...it works fine as is. 🙂

They were also on my Schwinn Impact. If Sheldon Brown thinks they're good, I'm not going to argue. From Sheldon: "Non-round chainwheels remain controversial, especially among racers who think that everyone should ride racing bikes, but, in my opinion, they are of real value for the vast majority of non-racing cyclists. The old Scwhinn's of quality are hard to beat. I have two Mesa GSX's from early-mid90's. The red one with 26x1.6" is one of my favorite rides. A nice fall morning and 40 miles of dirt roads in the hill country is a great way to have fun. The black one has the knobbies for off roading. IMHO I think the 7 speed Alivio shifters and Shimano STX package are quicker and crisper than 9 speed Ultergra brifters. Just my opinion of course. I also use a Schwinn Transit for a 700c touring bike and its great.
