My local bike store owner mentioned after my expensive cog/chainring/derailleur wheel replacement that I might want to try rotating chains to save wear to the gears. anybody else tried this? Seems like a good idea to me.

It isn't really necessary if you replace your chain at the appropriate time before it gets worn enough to chew up the cassette. You can see the recent thread entitled: replace chain after 1000 miles? to see more opinions on when the right time to replace the chain is than you probably ever would want to read.
