why the trepidation peter? jobst loves a good tongue-lashing but that doesn't /prove/ he knows
everything he goes on about - only that he can be more scornful/verbose/persistent than anyone else.

bottom line, he's not a materials guy, he's an engineer. his input is therefore limited on a subject
like this. if you're asking a question on exactly /why/ one component may be better than another,
post to sci.materials or sci.engineer.metallurgy.

in my experience of failure analysis, engineers are good at reading the spec book and picking a
material that superficially meets their needs, but completely at a loss when it doesn't work. they
just keep trying different materials in the hope that they'll fix the problem. chances are, their
original choice was perfectly adequate, but they didn't fully understand the application from the
materials perspective and didn't take those factors into account in the original design. once the
materials guy gets in there and helps the engineer over those hurdles, everything is fine.
assuming of course that the engineer's ego permits the concept of incomplete knowledge and is able
to take advice.

He is also a wheelbuilder, like me. I am not an engineer, have never been on a train, don't even
play one on TV...

Don't want an engineer's opinion, I want a wheelbuilder's opinion, I got BTW...from a guy that has
built 'many' wheels...
