making me aware of sandals earlier. Got
some Lake sandals, for spd of course,
and they are dream. Used them the first
time today on my road rain bike. Still
very hot here, and my feet were
infinitely more cool. They looked kind
of clunky in the box, as compared to my
shimano mtb shoes, but they don't feel
clunky when you ride. I have to do a
century ride now, to see if they pass
the moderate swelling foot test. If
they pass that, I may switch to spd's on
my endurance road bike. I do have wide
feet, and I use Sidi megas, which are
great. But if it's cold, and rainy, and
I stick a wool, or sealskin sock in
those sidi megas, it doesn't accommodate
for much swelling. I was thinking of
maybe using the sandals, with a wool
sock, and a waterproof sock, with the
sandals, anyone tried this? I must
confess that when I saw others where
sandals, they didn't seem appropriate,
especially on a road bike, so I know
that attitude exists, since I had it myself.
I've been using Shimano SPD sandals for a few years now. In the winter
time when it's wet, I wear warm socks covered with a layer or two of
water proof socks. You need to get a sandle thats a size larger than
what you would normally buy, but this works well and is so much easier
to dry than wet shoes.
When the weather is warm enough that I don't need the insulation, I
just wear the sandals barefoot, but if the roads are particularly
soaked, or it's raining hard, road grime tends to get lodged between
my achilles tendon and the back strap, eventually wearing a hole thru
my skin. I'm thinking something like a wristband for my ankle would
help with this, but for now I just use the waterproof socks on those
days.
