Recently I replaced my old trusty (notice I didn't say crusty) saddle. My old one had some rips/tears due to crashes due to racing so I decided to finally replace it. I had a brand new saddle sitting in the garage that I got with a new bike so I finally decided to use it. What a mistake that turned out to be. I trained on the new saddle for a little over a week which finished with a race. By the end of the race I was so sore that I could hardly get off the bike. My butt was incredibly sore the next day too but I thought it might have been the way I rode or something. After the race I took a day off and began sprint training again with the same saddle. I did a 8 to 10 mile warm up and did my first sprint interval but I had so much pain that I couldn't do the remaining sprints. I had to get off the bike and stretch some before continuing but I was still in pain. The next day I replaced my saddle and while I was still a little sore I didn't have any more pain from the saddle.
I just wanted to share this story with the group in case someone else is having a similar experience. The moral of this story is that a bad saddle can REALLY hurt (like preventing you from riding type of hurt).
Use creme, also I bought a new bike and the saddle was killing me but now its fine after I have adjusted it, it might need to be adjusted...moved forward or back or tilted up or down to find your sweet spot.

i'm a woman and i had the exact same problem. my bike came with a men's bontrager saddle. during the first 3 months of owning my first road bike, my mentality was that i just had to get my lower area "used to riding". needless to say, after these 3 months of riding like 5 times a week, i still would get to the point of utter pain as in - i would rather ride standing the entire time. if i put my ass back in that saddle i'm gonna scream - kind of pain, by the 45 min mark.
i switched to a terry cutout. the saddle is an absolute pleasure instead of excrutiating pain.
