Last week I'd taken the seat post out of an upright [1] and didn't get it back to the right height, about 1cm lower in fact. This week I find that instead of my normal 85-90 I'm doing about 100, with commensurate increase in speed of course. Wind doesn't account for it, trips this week have been out-and-back, at the same speed each way, so it must be the seat height [2]. Tomorrow I think I'll shorten the beam on the 'bent & see if the effect is the same.
[1] It was on the pulpit of a motor-cruiser on the Fens -- and did get taken off and used unlike the Brommie on the other side.

I find it's easier to pull up on the pedals when the saddle is a touch lower than the usual recommended height, and this helps when spinning.

I work with the system that with your heel /on/ the pedal (in a typical shoe) your leg is almost, but not quite straight, so looks like you were a bit higher than that particular suggestion. Might be worth coming down just a shade more for an experiment of how that affects things.
