I've never been on a ride before where so many riders suffered
punctures. At one point there were 4 of us stopped by the roadside
simultaneously changing tubes within about 50 yards of each other. Most
of the riders who passed me while I was fiddling I later repassed as
they were dealing with punctures of their own. I had 2 during the event
but managed (just) to finish in daylight. Dave sadly lost his much
discussed Ortlieb map holder on the short journey from Larrington
Towers to his car, and was forced to rely instead on a wossname. Did
you find it eventually, Dave?

Turns out it had actually fallen on the floor under the kitchen table...

In addition to:

o losing a cleat fixing bolt[1]
o one of my dynamo lights cutting out every time I hit a bump
o the other dynamo light being, as a result of its having to be mounted
umop-ap!sdn, of use only in illuminating passing owls[2], and
o the cassette lockring coming loose

I had two visits from the P+nct+r+ Fairy and an infinite amount of trouble
with tubes thereafter. Mr. Park's much-vaunted Glueless Patches declined to
remain air-tight and the one tube I patched with traditional old-fashioned
Gloop from a Tube didn't either. The Least Bad tube - the one I extracted
from the right front wheel the previous night - was finally reinstalled in
the back wheel at the 255 km mark, and ended up squidgy after 10 km. I
banged it up /really/ hard and it lasted the rest of the way back. Finished
at 00:20; comparison of auto-start and non-auto-start computers suggest 3.5
hours stationary. Bah!

A bunch of new tubes ordered from Gearshift first thing yesterday morning.
Any more rides like that and I'm going to take up gardening instead...

1 - natch, being Carnac shoes, the bolts are longer than the standard item.
Anyone know from whence they may be had?
2 - fortunately I also had a brace of EL500s and an LED head torch...
